R&D WORKS Vol. 13
Smart City Vision for the Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho Areas
Making people's "movement" smart and walkable
In the area spanning Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho, efforts are underway to create a next-generation smart city that will incorporate new technologies. In formulating the Otemachi-Marunouchi Smart City Vision, an initiative to paint a picture of the future, we proposed a "redesign of the city to accommodate new forms of mobility." Large-scale pedestrian spaces assisted by personal mobility and new transportation systems that integrate architecture and infrastructure will change the way cities are.
Image 1 Coexistence of pedestrians and personal mobility
One of the major themes of the OMY Smart City Vision is the proposal of new pedestrian spaces. The pedestrian-priority space, which has been created in the city planning and is full of bustle and amenities, will be further enhanced and redesigned by introducing new technologies and new forms of mobility. It will not be merely a pedestrian-only space, but here "new forms of mobility" such as personal mobility and pallet-type mobility will assist people. A space will be developed that will further promote physical communication between people. There will no longer be any boundaries between the roadside stores and the sidewalk, or between the sidewalk and the roadway, and buildings and infrastructure will be seamlessly connected, and events will sometimes be held, making the road space not only a place for passage, but also a place of bustle.

Image 2 Seamlessly connected transportation hubs
We will build a road transport system that combines multiple means of transportation, such as walking with different speeds and uses, low- and medium-speed personal mobility, self-driving cars, and public transport systems, without being limited by the conventional concept of roads and sidewalks. Switching between modes of transportation is important here. We will design transport nodes that smartly connect the flow of movement.
(Marunouchi Building, Shin-Marunouchi Building, Gyoko Underground Passage, Underground Plaza in front of the station, etc. / Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo)
In order to improve the transportation connection in front of Tokyo Station, which is the central station of Japan,
The buildings around the station and the urban infrastructure facilities were planned in a continuous and integrated manner.
We planned an integrated, attractive station, station plaza, and commercial facilities that are worthy of being the "face" of Kyushu and the "gateway" to Asia.
Image 3 Underground space where architecture and mobility come together
The underground space is a nodal space between architecture and mobility, with access to the subway and underground passages, and connections to parking lots. Here too, a system that seamlessly switches between modes of "mobility" will be introduced, creating new flows. New technologies such as autonomous driving will enable efficient parking, creating surplus parking space. This space will be converted into lively spaces such as hangars for new mobility vehicles and taxi pools. For example, mobile pallet-type mobility will be introduced to change the quality of the space. This will create unprecedented vitality in the underground space, which has previously been used mainly for transportation and parking.
Image 4 Optimization planning for the entire town
In order to optimize roads, transportation hubs, and other transport infrastructure, we will redesign the entire structure of the city, including buildings and streets.
We were commissioned by Toshima Ward to carry out consulting work compiling infrastructure development policies for the area around Ikebukuro Station.
