HULIC SQUARE TOKYO THE GATE HOTEL TOKYO by HULIC

This is a commercial facility and hotel complex completed near the Sukiyabashi intersection in Ginza, Tokyo. The site is a junction where two towns with different characteristics overlap: the Ginza side is a glamorous downtown area, the Yurakucho/Marunouchi side is an office district with buildings lining Daimyo-koji, and the Hibiya side is a hustle and bustle that leads to the underpass. Furthermore, it is surrounded on three sides by the JR tracks, the elevated expressway, and Harumi-dori, and the location's connection to the town changes in height as well, from ground level to the elevated level and high-rise level.

The architecture aims to maximize the footprint and increase density, while reconstructing the relationship with the city, which changes not only horizontally but also vertically. The expressway on the south side was built by filling in the Sotobori River before the recent Tokyo Olympics. Due to the meandering of this river, the site is tilted to the grid, and the corner of the site is on the extension of the axis of Daimyo-koji and Harumi-dori. facade on the Harumi-dori side of the upper floors is shifted in volume to receive this axis, and the guest rooms are arranged as cantilevered glass curtain walls. The corner-free guest rooms offer a panoramic view, and are symbolic of the hotel's concept of "oneness with the city." In addition, the hotel lobby on the fourth floor has a terrace with greenery, which functions as a public space in the city that connects to the space left above the expressway. By capturing the urban space in three dimensions, we have created a new open space in the city and a lively town.
