Position detection and air conditioning control support the creation of new office environments

Newly developed system "MELRemo-IPS" won the Grand Prize in the Environmental and Equipment Design Awards

Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanisawa) is pleased to announce that its "MELRemo-IPS" won the Grand Prize at the 21st Environmental and Equipment Design Awards (sponsored by the Japan Construction Equipment Association). "MELRemo-IPS" is a system that uses existing multi-air conditioners for buildings to display people's positions and temperature environments, and is expected to be used and deployed in a variety of ways (joint demonstration: Mitsubishi Electric Corporation).

Resolving the challenges of "new ways of working" with existing office environments and newly developed technologies
Today, ABW (Activity Based Working, a way of working in which workers choose the most suitable place for efficient work depending on the nature of the work) is becoming more widespread as part of work style reform and workplace reconstruction. While this is attracting attention as a "new way of working that is not limited to a specific location," issues such as the lack of fixed seats and the spread of remote work, making it unclear whether workers are present or absent, are becoming apparent.

"MELRemo-IPS" is a tool that solves these issues in ABW offices, sharing the location of workers in real time using two newly developed technologies: 1) technology to communicate and operate the multi-air conditioners commonly found in offices, and 2) technology to identify location using the signal strength of smartphones, etc. At the same time, workers can "create" a comfortable environment by operating the air conditioners themselves. The data obtained from this can be used not only for temperature analysis, but also for improvements such as revitalizing communication in ABW offices.

Novelty and technical features of MELRemo-IPS

"MELRemo-IPS" is
[Newly developed technology ①] Technology to wirelessly control multi-air conditioners for buildings
[Newly developed technology ②] Technology to measure and identify the location of PCs and smartphones by the strength of the radio waves emitted
This is a system that uses these two newly developed technologies to detect and share the location of workers. It can use multi-air conditioners that are already installed, The system can be introduced at low cost without adding new facilities or equipment. are cited as advantages.

The technical key to establishing a highly accurate system is that the installation interval between typical air conditioners (approximately 7.2 to 9 meters) matches the communication distance of Bluetooth® Low Energy (approximately 10 meters), and that it utilizes the ceiling surface, which is an ideal location for receiving radio waves.

What can be achieved by combining location detection and air conditioning: Using multi-air conditioners to help build ABW offices

About the Environmental and Facilities Design Award

The Environmental & Facilities Design Award (Chairperson of the Judging Committee: Nobuaki Furuya, Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University) is an award that evaluates the combination of architecture and facilities technology from the four standpoints of sensibility, functionality, economy, and sociality in an era when the role of environmental and facilities technology in architecture is increasing. It has earned a strong reputation in both the fields of architectural design and facilities.
"MELRemo-IPS" won the Grand Prize in the "I. Equipment and System Design" category, which is for versatile equipment, devices, and systems.
