Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanizawa) is pleased to announce that it will reveal the full scope of the project, including technical details, of "Arabi-An Tea House," a teahouse and furniture pavilion exhibited at Dubai Design Week 2023 (November 7-12, 2023) in Dubai, and "Veneti-An Tea House," exhibited at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2023).
The second project following "Veneti-An Tea House" that puts resource circulation and responds to local characteristics into practice
Arabian, named after the English word "Arabian" and the Japanese word "an," is Arabi-An Tea House that uses new materials made from food waste (tea leaves and dried fruit) found in the local culture and recyclable resources (recycled paper) as building materials as an attempt to put into practice the "circular economy" (economic activities that create new value while making effective use of stocks) that is attracting worldwide attention today.
In addition, the latitude of the location where it will be installed is incorporated into the design, achieving both universality that can be deployed around the world and local specificity. After the exhibition ends, the pieces will be disassembled into parts for further upcycling, and then reassembled and redistributed as furniture that can be shaped in various ways.
This pavilion is the second exhibition following the prototype exhibited at the "Time Space Existence 2023" exhibition event at the Venice Biennale 2023, which was held from May to January 2023.
Architectural Features of the "Arabi-An Tea House"
1. Generate the shape based on the latitude of the exhibition venue
Focusing on the latitude (25 degrees) of the Emirate of Dubai, where the exhibition will be held, the frame structure is based on this angle in order to properly introduce/block sunlight into the pavilion. The frame is made of Miura-ori wire that has been laminated, and the joint parts, which are the key to the structure, have a curved design that allows force to flow smoothly. This is an expansion of the joint technology Mitsubishi Jisho Design has been researching as part of its R&D.
The system of this pavilion is designed to suit the latitude of the location where it is installed; the recent exhibition in Venice was designed based on the local latitude (45 degrees), responding to the characteristics of each region.
2. Technology to realize a "Circular Pavilion"
1. Turning food waste into components: The joint parts are made of "food concrete," which is made by heating and compressing food waste generated in the exhibition area. This time, tea leaves and dried fruit are used as food waste unique to the Arab world, in response to local issues.
2. Reduction of CO2 emissions during transportation through weight reduction: Semi-permanently recyclable paper and cork are used to reduce weight. Designers can transport the materials in suitcases (120L cases x 7).
3) Water-resistant treatment that returns to nature: In order to use materials that are weak against water as building materials, the physical properties of each material were investigated, and a transcendent liquid made from naturally occurring silicon was mixed and applied to each component. The hydroxyl groups of each part were bonded through a chemical reaction to achieve water resistance. In addition, lacquer painting, a traditional Japanese waterproofing method, was introduced. As natural materials are used, both of these waterproofing treatments return to the soil.
Generally, building materials used outdoors are homogeneous regardless of region, such as metal, glass, stone, and concrete, but with these technologies, we are exploring the possibility of using various environmentally friendly organic materials as building materials.
3. Developments after the exhibition period ends
After the exhibition period ends, "Arabi-An Tea House" will be disassembled into its individual parts. Those who wish to own it will be able to create the shape they want online, and the parts will be provided together with an NFT-ized assembly diagram. At this time, 3D data will also be provided, and it will be possible to create and expand parts using a 3D printer or NC machine.
The Arabi-An Tea House was designed with the intention of turning it into furniture, and can be thought of as a teahouse made up of furniture parts.
This time, by developing "Veneti-An Tea House" and "Arabi-An Tea House" using recycled materials from different countries and developing a design that matches the latitude of the installation location, we were able to put into practice and demonstrate the "Circular Economy" at an Architectural Design office, and the space has been highly acclaimed overseas as a space for the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and as a work of art. By disclosing the technical aspects and full details of this project, we hope to see it being developed in various ways both domestically and internationally, and to make it available to a wider audience through NFT.
We would appreciate your cooperation in covering this event.
