Gyoko Underground Passage
Gyoko Underground Passage
Marunouchi Parking is located underground on Gyoko-dori in front of Tokyo Station, and was built in 1960 as Japan's first large-scale underground parking lot. However, as redevelopment of the surrounding area, especially Marunouchi, progressed, each building was equipped with its own parking lot, and the parking lot's role as a parking lot in the city plan came to an end. In 2004, the city plan was changed so that the parking lot on the first basement floor was changed to a city plan road, and the parking lot was redeveloped as an off-site contribution project by the private sector.
This project involved planning redevelopment, converting the basement parking lot area to a road, and developing an underground pedestrian network.
Because the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's road construction project recreated a four-row avenue of ginkgo trees on Gyoko-dori Street above ground, it was necessary to install giant planting pots underground as well. Here, the four-row avenue of ginkgo trees was realized by planning to place the giant planting pots in the backyard of the Gyoko Underground Gallery.
