Gakushuin University The South Building No.1

Gakushuin University The South Building No.1

A project to preserve and utilize a school building that is over 80 years old and has been designated a national tangible cultural property.
By carrying out earthquake-resistance reinforcement work, making the building barrier-free, and installing new toilets, we aim to be able to continue using the building as a classroom for decades to come.
Rather than taking a method that would make the renovated and expanded areas stand out, our first priority was to maintain the authenticity of the existing building, harmonize the old and new, and pass on people's memories.
In order to repair and waterproof the structure, all but a few of the exterior wall tiles were removed and new tiles were installed. However, some of the original tiles were left in place and did not affect the structure, and some of the removed tiles were reused. Based on the idea of "restoration," care was taken to not damage the building's value as a cultural asset.
