Quantitative performance analysis results for energy saving, comfort and health received high marks

<Summary and evaluation of the "Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan Technology Award">

The Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan Award is given annually by the Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan, a public interest incorporated association that is an academic organization in the fields of engineering related to air-conditioning, sanitation, the environment, energy, etc., with the aim of promoting academic and technological progress. The Technology Award (Building Equipment Category) that "SUSTIE" received this time recognizes achievements that are recognized as having value as works that skillfully harmonize technology in the planning, design, construction and operation of building equipment or environmental equipment-related facilities.
The following five points were highly evaluated in awarding the award:

  2. The design combines architectural innovations (passive design) such as the installation of openings to let in natural ventilation and shading from direct sunlight with eaves, and the introduction of highly efficient equipment (active design).
  3. In addition to introducing highly efficient multi-air conditioners for ZEB buildings and general-purpose packaged air conditioners, the design requirements for common areas have been relaxed to reduce the capacity of air conditioning equipment by approximately 40%.

Figure 1. A combination of passive and active designs
Figure 2. Primary energy consumption
  1. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc., Professor Shinichi Tanabe (Waseda University), Kodensha Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Refrigeration and Cooling Plant Corporation
  2. A ZEB-related technology demonstration building completed in 2020 at Mitsubishi Electric's Information Technology R&D Center (Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture)
  3. A building with zero or negative annual primary energy balance. The highest rank in the Japanese ZEB definition.
  4. The ratio of design/actual primary energy consumption to the standard primary energy consumption. The design is calculated using an energy consumption performance calculation program (non-residential version) based on the design drawings, and the actual results are calculated based on the actual measured values.
  5. Platinum is the highest rating given by a third party to a variety of functions that affect the well-being (physical, mental and social well-being) of people working in a building.
  6. Activity Based Working: A way of working where you can freely choose where to work based on the nature of the work at hand.
<Future plans>

We will continue to operate "SUSTIE" and verify its effectiveness in energy conservation, health promotion, and increased productivity, while also working on new demonstration projects that contribute to carbon neutral buildings and the well-being of office occupants.
