Project Overview

A project to preserve and revive the Kabukiza. The 5th Kabukiza will inherit the image and acoustics of its predecessor, the 4th Kabukiza (completed in 1950, designed by Yoshida Gojuhachi), while improving its theatrical functions, developing an underground plaza directly connected to the subway station, a cultural facility that conveys Japanese traditions, and incorporating a high-quality office building. The office building will be located directly above the stage. This configuration was made possible by the megastructure.

In order for the theater to remain economically sustainable in the city center even in the 21st century, it was decided to have offices attached to the theater, and it became essential to respond through urban planning. Utilizing the special urban regeneration district, the theater is carrying out three main initiatives: "creating and disseminating culture centered on Kabuki," "contributing to urban development, including urban infrastructure development," and "responding to regional disaster prevention." This also allowed the theater to have a pocket park to accommodate the flow of people from the subway, and the liveliness of the theater is developed in three dimensions.

The first Kabukiza was completed in 1889 (Meiji 22), and even after war damage, it is a rare presence that has remained in the same place for over 100 years and five generations. There are examples of smart city development centered on offices, housing, and commercial facilities, but here, cutting-edge technology has been used to create a city that will continue to pass on culture, with the cultural facility of the theater at its center.

One element of smart cities that is required by the times and society is to preserve and regenerate cultural facilities in a sustainable manner while utilizing the latest technology to develop cities.
