Using wood for sustainable construction Part 1

Mitsubishi Jisho Design Smart City TOP

Changing the way we care for the global environment

Until now, the main building materials used for medium- to large-scale buildings have been concrete and steel frames. Both materials have high material strength and excellent workability, and there is a wealth of accumulated technology. However, issues remain regarding the CO2 emitted during construction and the energy used.
Amid this, there has been growing interest in the construction of medium to large-scale wooden building structures in recent years, against a backdrop of a movement to reevaluate wood materials that have a CO2 fixation effect, and a growing momentum to make effective use of domestic timber as the large amount of artificial forests planted after the war reach the age of utilization.

Here, we will introduce some examples of proactive use of wood as a structural material in response to the above-mentioned social trends.
