When you come back from a scorching hot day outside, it can be hard to adjust the temperature in your office even if you want to turn it down for a moment. Until now, offices have been designed with the aim of creating a uniform thermal environment for optimization. This is an environment where people adapt to the office. However, as work styles have diversified, the office is now changing into an environment where people can adapt to each other, providing individual environments according to their individual conditions. Together with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, we have developed a system that allows you to control your office's air conditioning using your own smartphone.
Today's air conditioner remote controls are located far away.
In recent office buildings, packaged air conditioners called "multi-air conditioners for buildings" in which multiple indoor units are connected to one outdoor unit are widely used. Where is the remote control? It is fixed on the wall near the entrance of the room. In a large room, it is far from your desk, so it is not practical to operate it as needed depending on the situation. Every time this happens, you may think, "I can operate my air conditioner at home with just one wireless remote control..." In most office buildings, once the person in charge turns it on, it is often left that way. In addition, since the remote control and the indoor unit are connected by a cable, adding or changing partitions requires not only the relocation of the remote control, but also the replacement of the cable.
Utilizing the smartphones that everyone carries
In today's world, where diversity in work styles is required, for example when implementing a free address system or when the population density on a floor is uneven, more personal control of the air conditioner is required. So, can't we use a wireless remote control like the air conditioner at home? In fact, household remote controls use infrared rays, which are blocked by various obstacles in the office and cannot be used reliably. In addition, it is surprisingly difficult to manage the remote control. Even at home, we sometimes lose track of where the remote control is, but it is even more difficult in a company with a large number of people. So we decided to use the smartphone that each person carries as a remote control terminal. This is because it has several communication functions by default. Another option is to incorporate the air conditioner into the LAN through the smartphone's Wi-Fi. However, if communication is via Wi-Fi, it is complicated to build a dedicated network and it is costly to manage. That's why we adopted Bluetooth®. By installing a small Bluetooth® receiver in the existing air conditioner, it is possible to connect the smartphone and the air conditioner one-to-one. For ceiling-embedded air conditioners, we are conducting demonstration experiments so that the receiver can be installed hidden in the ceiling. All you have to do is install the application on your smartphone. You can select the air conditioner you want to connect and operate it from your hand.
"MEL Remo" is a smartphone app for controlling air conditioners
(Supported OS: iOS10 or later, Android5.0 or later)
The app is versatile and can also control other interior fixtures such as lighting fixtures and screens.
