BIM (Building Information Modeling) is architectural modeling data that comprehensively includes all information about a building, such as design, structure, and facilities. It has a future goal of utilizing centralized information from design to post-construction operation and management. In design and construction, it contributes to visualizing the information of shapes and materials and sharing the image, but there are still major challenges in dynamic analysis of facilities and structures, and collaboration across fields. Software for analysis, calculation, and cost estimation, and methods for sharing information between fields are still insufficient. To solve this, we are developing a practical system that uses Excel, a well-known software already used in various processes, as an intermediate medium for data.

Information system based on general-purpose software Excel (Mitsubishi Jisho Design 's BIM utilization policy)

The challenge with BIM is sharing information between software

A building that has completed BIM retains all the information that makes up the building, such as the structure, finishes, materials, and equipment, making it possible to create a digital workflow for a series of steps, from various design processes to subsequent construction and MEP Engineering and Structural Engineering. The reason for this is that the information specifications between the modeling software and the analysis software do not mesh. In the end, the current situation is that the model is manually recreated in the analysis software each time, and it is not a workflow that can be called BIM.

Characteristics of data held by BIM

BIM data is characterized by its structured nature. For example, equipment such as air conditioners has individual information such as size, which is separate from larger information such as belonging to the air conditioning equipment. By structuring all information as variables, for example, equipment with the same shape can be organized into a series based on differences in performance and collectively organized into information, or conversely, it can be given an identity within a complex 3D model. In addition, the fine details of architecture have small unevenness and take a huge amount of time to process, which is inconvenient for capturing global characteristics such as airflow analysis. However, in addition to precise shape data, the structured information of BIM actually contains data that can extract simple shapes. The structured information itself is complex and vast, and it is inefficient to handle it as it is. We need to take advantage of these characteristics and come up with a system to extract and share the necessary information.

Design Scheme

An Excel-based system that removes the barriers to BIM

These issues have led to a major misunderstanding that complex and huge amounts of information and special software that can handle them are required. In order to resolve these issues and misunderstandings, we are building a system that allows Excel to coexist as BIM. In reality, any information medium should be fine. The reasons we chose Excel are as follows:

● High demand as a business tool
Excel is often used in our design work, such as for tallying up areas, technical calculations such as ventilation, and cost estimation. Because of the high demand, most people should be able to use Excel.

●Excel import/export function
Excel has built-in data input/output functions such as CSV and XML. Even software that is not so-called "BIM compatible" often has such data input/output functions, and Excel acts as a bridge between them.

- By visualizing various information, development and design speed can be accelerated.
The biggest problem with directly linking software to each other is the data format. If the formats are different, you cannot proceed without deciphering the structure. Therefore, by first visualizing the information required for linking from the 3D model in a simple form in Excel as a common format and sharing it, concurrent development is realized. It also makes it easier to adapt to calculation documents and BIM modeling technology used in the conventional design process, improving the design process. By combining it with the airflow analysis system jointly developed in parallel, it was confirmed that the workflow, which previously took more than a day, was dramatically shortened.
