JAPAN SPORT OLYMPIC SQUARE ──Manual natural ventilation system
A rich environment can be created by opening and closing the windows by hand.
Opening and closing the windows of a high-rise building by hand - this creates a rich environment. By manually controlling natural ventilation, workers can finely adjust the environment to suit themselves. The ability to freely adjust the environment, like putting on and taking off a jacket, improves performance, optimizes the environment, and raises workers' environmental awareness. People make full use of the building through manual labor. This has been realized in a high-rise office building.
Manual natural ventilation in high-rise buildings
JAPAN SPORT OLYMPIC SQUARE is a 14-story complex building. Because it is located in an environment where the prevailing wind blows steadily from the north-northwest, a system that enables natural ventilation was built. This is manual natural ventilation, where the windows are opened and closed by hand. A natural ventilation system is essential to improving energy-saving and environmental performance.
This building is long from north to south and has large openings on the east and west sides. This allows for simple natural ventilation, where outside air is introduced from the west side and exhausted to the east side. There is no need for complex cross-sectional planning, as with natural ventilation using stairwells, in other words gravity ventilation, which draws light warm air from above. In addition, while natural ventilation is generally dominated by mechanical automatic control using sensors, there is a significance in using manual ventilation here. Nowadays, workers are being asked to adjust their working environment to suit themselves. Manual ventilation is one of those settings. Another advantage of manual ventilation is that it allows for large amounts of ventilation at once, in these days when ventilation is required to suppress infectious diseases.
The floor is installed to prevent falls.
The louvers also reduce wind speed to about one-third.
Confirmation of effectiveness of natural ventilation
We conducted an environmental analysis to see how effective natural ventilation would be with both the prevailing north-northwest wind and the southerly wind from the opposite direction. We found that a wind speed of 2.5 m/s already generated 17 times the amount of natural ventilation generated by the facility, proving its effectiveness. Natural ventilation is also limited to times when the outdoor conditions are good. It is used in almost all seasons except mid-winter and mid-summer, but depending on the conditions, condensation may occur indoors due to the influence of the outdoor air. Therefore, we analyzed the outdoor temperature conditions at which it is okay to open the windows, and set three operating modes to determine how to use air conditioning and natural ventilation. First, since there is no condensation when the outdoor temperature is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, only natural ventilation is used when the wind speed is 1.0 m/s or higher, and natural ventilation + air conditioning is used when the wind is weaker than that. For outdoor temperatures other than those mentioned above, the windows are closed and only air conditioning is used. The appropriate outdoor temperature and humidity are measured by a sensor, and when the conditions suitable for natural ventilation are met, an indicator posted in the room lights up. We built a system in which workers can open and close the windows by making their own judgments based on the indication.
There are many strong winds on the upper floors, but the large vertical light-blocking louvers installed act as a windbreak, allowing for optimal wind speeds through the windows for ventilation. In addition, the overhangs on each floor for installing the louvers also help prevent objects from falling when the windows are opened.
In mode 2, which uses both natural ventilation and air conditioning, if the outside temperature is between 15 and 25°C and the dew point temperature is up to 16°C, it is not too cold and condensation does not occur.
Under optimal conditions, the air conditioning load can be reduced even with the windows open.
You can see some of the air entering from the west side swirling and the wind flow exiting from the east side.
The indicator lights up at the optimal timing for ventilation, when there is not much difference between the two.
